Inhabited Island film details

There was a story on Variety about how well the Russian sci-fi epic Inhabited Island opened locally, so I wanted to share some details on this film. The film is a certified blockbuster in Russia and the Ukraine, and has a rich and dark look, which is described as reminiscent of Blade Runner and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Russia’s biggest-budget movie ever, the nearly $40 million sci-fi actioner is currently being shopped around to U.S. studios.

Based on a 1968 Soviet novel by brothers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Inhabited Island tells the story of a joy-riding young space traveler who crash lands on a distant planet far into the future, where a vicious tribe of five sadistic leaders keeps the population subjugated through fear and mind control.

Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk, will likely follow in the footsteps of fellow Russian director Timur Bekmambetov, who started out making vampire action films, then went on to helm Wanted here in the U.S. Bekmambetov was supposed to go back to Russia, and shoot the third film in the planned trilogy, titled Twilight Watch (originally Dusk Watch), which was to be a co-production between the U.S. and Russia. However, Bloody-Digusting reported some time ago, that film may not happen.

He told the site in a June 2008 interview:

Its a big mess! I dont know what will happen with this project…Wanted took its place. Wanted became the American version of Night Watch. So for the moment I am not doing this.
