It’s been reported for some time that Fox is overseeing a big-screen version of the popular Japanese anime series Cowboy Bebop. Variety has confirmed that Keanu Reeves in fact attached to star as the easygoing bounty hunter Spike Spiegel, who wanders through space in search of fortune and good times, in the year 2071. Cowboy Bebop is an anime cult classic, so Fox better not drop the ball on this one, like they seemed to have with the Watchmen graphic novel, or they may have a full-scale fanboy mutiny on their hands.
The original story is set in a time where “astral gates” make interstellar travel possible. Humanity is nearly decimated by a lunar explosion, and is now spread across the solar system, along with crime, which has given rise to space-traveling bounty hunters.
Spiegel is a former member of a crime syndicate, turned bounty hunter, and pilots the spaceship Bebop, along with his partner Jet Black.
