Here is our full gallery of images from New York Comic-Con 2014, featuring the costumes, celebrities, artists, collectibles and vendor booths that made up one of the largest pop culture events in the world. Check back at this page later today for video clips, including a special video presentation I put together featuring my journey to the Con. Enjoy!
Our coverage began with the unveiling of the Limited Edition Forever Batman stamp series in celebration of the Caped Crusader’s 75th Anniversary. DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio were joined by the stamp sheet designer, Greg Breeding and U.S. Postal Service CIO Jim Cochrane to discuss the significance of Batman in American popular culture and just how he made it on to a USPS stamp.
Chevrolet was a major sponsor of New York Comic-Con for 2014, displaying a fleet of their line wrapped in current comic book titles. While fans browsed their display, DJ JFX from Super Fly Comics in Yellow Springs, Ohio let the beats go boom, with a mix of dance, house and remixes of some pop favorites.
We also talked to Andrew Stroup, Gui Cavalcanti and Matt Oehrlein, the Boston-based team behind Megabots. They are out to change the concept of paintball forever, as they attempt to crowdsource the first in a potential line of battle-ready weekend warrior giant fighting robots. The Megabots appearance at New York Comic-Con was supported by Autodesk. For those of you as excited as we are about the possibilities here, a MegaBot is a larger-than-life, 15-foot-tall, 15,000-pound internally piloted robot. It will be capable of firing massive, paint-filled projectiles at speeds of more than 120 miles per hour. The idea to build MegaBots began in the childhood dreams of each founder. However, the skills, means and opportunity to accomplish those goals first materialized in 2012 when Stroup and Cavalcanti met as competitors on the Discovery Channel reality TV show The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius, an elimination-style engineering competition show. Check out the photos of an early version of their work on phase one of their plans, below.
Other images in this first set include Chris Hardwick moderating panels for Disney’s upcoming Big Hero 6, featuring Jamie Chung along with other members of the voice cast and behind-the-scenes team. Director Brad Bird along with George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie came by to discuss their new Disney film Tomorrowland, as well. The audience was shocked by Clooney’s surprise visit, however we had a running bet at #FilmFetish that he’d come to support the film.
Adam West entertained a huge panel of fans as he humorously discussed his days as the Caped Crusader. Check out our images of him reacting to some fan questions and recognizable costumes. Speaking of costumes, this year was an incredible year for cosplay and costumes, as NYCC hosted the Eastern Championships of Cosplay. Some of the many costumes we captured below feature models Karma Kitty & Jackie Allegra, a classic looking Batman & Robin, some surprisingly friendly zombies, a cute female Star Wars cadet, along with many, many more.
One of the standout displays featured WETA Workshop promoting the upcoming The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. You’ve got to see this display, it’s just stunning. The McCall Pattern Company also took part this year, displaying a sophisticated line of reproduction costumes from pop culture.
