Leonardo DiCaprio suspense thriller Shutter Island to receive graphic novel treatment along with film

According to ICV2, Leonardo DiCaprio’s upcoming thriller Shutter Island will also become a comic book, come 2010.

Tokyopop will publish a full-color, 128-page graphic novel adaptation based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. The comic was originally adapted for French publisher Casterman by artist Christian de Metter.

Tokyopop’s English translation will hit store shelves on January 5th, 2010, with the Martin Scorsese-directed movie reaching theaters one month later on February 19th.

Shutter Island, which is set in 1954, follows a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels, who travels to a mental hospital on an island off the coast of Massachusetts, to investigate a patient’s disappearance. Things soon get all the more complicated when both a hurricane and a mass escape strike the island at once, leading to a deadly situation that tests the sanity of everybody, especially Daniels.

According to reports, the graphic novel marks the first time acclaimed author Dennis Lehane has received a comic book adaptation of one of his novels. Lehane also wrote Gone, Baby, Gone and Mystic River, both of which were adapted into Oscar-nominated and winning films.
