This is seriously exciting. I wonder what inspired McFarlane start hammering out this new script. Whatever it was, it’s about time. Spawn is one of my favorite cult comic characters. I look forward to seeing how this develops.
McFarlane recently declared via Twitter that he is finally writing a script for a Spawn follow-up movie, reports Splashpage.
“I’ve officially begun writing the Spawn movie screenplay. The story has been in my head for 7 or 8 years. – Todd McFarlane on Twitter”
According to the report, McFarlane previously suggested that he could direct a lower-budget version of the film, but a big-budget project would be handed over to a more tested filmmaker. McFarlane explained the dilemma thusly:
“I’m trying to decide whether I want to go big production, bigger money, bigger marketing—or just do something that’s a little bit smaller, more rock ‘n’ roll, and the way I’ve had it in my brain for the last five years.”
The Spawn creator describes the new film as a stand-alone story that will be R-rated. He also calls it creepy and scary, and made for an older audience. In an MTV News interview in June, McFarlane suggesting that Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred Martin Scorsese’s crime drama The Departed (which he compares to a new Spawn film in tone), would be perfect for a major role in a new Spawn film project.
