[REC] was one of the scariest horror films of the last 10 years. It’s simple story about a Spanish TV journalist and her cameraman accompanying a group of firefighters on a routine call for their news show, leveled more blows to the cranium than an NFL career.
When the team arrives at the apartment building on the outskirts of Madrid, they’re quarantined because of a nasty virus that’s somehow spread. [REC] follows the firefighter’s efforts to battle the by-product of the virus – ferocious, zombie-like creatures wreaking havoc within the apartment complex – while the news team chronicles events on camera, trying to avoid becoming the evening news themselves.
[REC] 2 picks up during the immediate aftermath of the events of [REC], with a SWAT team – accompanied by a doctor from the Ministry of Heath – heading to the scene of the carnage to find out what has happened to their predecessors.
Along with a video camera, the officers have head-cams, helping [REC] 2 retain the documentary style of the original, while adding tension by showing events from each man’s perspective. The creatures attack with a ferocity seldom seen in movies, adding layers of gut-wrenching chills throughout the film. Writer-directors Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza have also expanded the plot for the sequel, elaborating on previously hinted at reasons for the outbreak.
[REC] 2 gives horror fans exactly what they’re looking for – a reason to be scared. The result is a great sequel to a thrilling film, which ups the ante while retaining the taut atmosphere of the original.
The highly anticipated sequel to one of the scariest films of all time, [REC] 2 is a must-see.
[REC] 2 was written by Jaume Balagueró, Manu Díez and Paco Plaza (Quarantine, Quarantine 2: Terminal), produced by Julio Fernández, and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza.
Special features on the DVD a nice set of Deleted and Extended Scenes, expanding even more on the [REC] lexicon. There’s also a series of Behind the Scenes Featurettes that take viewers through the shoot, from the conceptual stages, through final post-production. A Walkthrough of the Set brings viewers on a detailed tour of the apartment building where much of the drama unfolds. [REC] 2 on Tour is a featurette showing the reception of the film in various areas. Finally, a press conference with the filmmakers is shown at the Sitges Film Festival.
