More about Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense
Jazz is a living thing, a conversation between musicians and each other, as well as the audience and the genre, that today is undergoing changes of monumental magnitude and importance. Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense is a highly-acclaimed documentary that captures the metamorphosis of jazz by showcasing the words, music, and spirit of the artists that are paving the way for an unprecedented musical revolution. Through interviews with 75 jazz artists culled from over seven years and over 25 hours of live performance footage and concerts, the film, called “a celebration of the roots of the creative process,” explores the thoughts and lives of the musicians spearheading today’s jazz front lines.
Directed by Michael Rivoira, Lars Larson and Peter J. Vogt, Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense examines the jazz music scene today by focusing the spotlight on many current jazz icons including Terence Blanchard, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane, Dave Douglas and Brass Ecstasy, Robert Glasper, Nicholas Payton, Brian Blade & the Fellowship Band, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Medeski Martin and Wood. The film also features the legendary predecessors and influences of today’s contemporary jazz stars, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Wynton Marsalis.
Icons Among Us: Jazz In The Present Tense also contains bonuses including the featurettes Jazz and the Grateful Dead, Jazz and Pearl Jam, along with additional performances. Don’t miss the film which the Seattle International Film Festival called “fresh and constantly surprising with a spirit and energy that innovates even as it receycles”.
