Universal Pictures has contracted Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) to produce and direct a feature version of Battlestar Galactica, according to Variety.
According to the report, Singer will be putting his own creative stamp on the project, as Universal indicates that the film will be “a complete reimagination.” Series creator Glen A. Larson will return to produce the new film.
The original cult classic series ran for only two seasons on ABC starting in 1978. Singer had tossed around the idea of relaunching the franchise into a TV series just after he directed the original X-Men, and teamed with X-Men producer Tom DeSanto to develop the project, and possibly direct a pilot. One can only imagine what would have come from that pairing.
Singer got busy with other projects, and the recent 73-episode series had a successful run on the then Sci-Fi Channel beginning in 2004.
