Paramount has greenlit a sequel to the new Star Trek relaunch, and Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof are set to write the screenplay, according to Variety.
J.J. Abrams, who directed and produced the most recent film, will produce the follow-up. No details have been released on whether Abrams will also lens the future sequel.
While still in the early stages, the writing trio are looking to deliver the script by Christmas 2009, for what would likely be a summer 2011 release. As for potential storylines, Kurtzman stressed that the team will take cues from fan reaction to the new film, to help steer the direction of the new film.
Below is the final release poster for the new film, which hits theaters on May 8, 2009.
