Warner Bros. is planning to bring Tom and Jerry to theaters to create a new family franchise, according to Variety. Plans are to bring the always-fighting cat and mouse duo to life as CG characters within in live-action settings, similar to how Scooby Doo was brought to the big screen.
The film project will be an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first met and formed their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together to find their way back home. Eric Gravning (Mr. Burnout) is writing the script.
Apparently Warners owns the rights to Hanna-Barbera’s entire slate of animated properties and has many of them in development for film treatments, including Robert Rodriguez’s version of The Jetsons, along with a movie version of Yogi Bear.
